The Secured Electronic Transaction (SET) standard is expected to revolutionize electronic commerce. The SET standard is based on public key cryptography and uses cryptographically encoded digital certificates to limit the exchange of sensitive information, such as credit card numbers, over the Internet. About 1.8% of auto and homeowners insurance sales in the US are expected to be conducted via the Internet in the year 2000, according to a study conduct by Datamonitor.
