Brave new world: the transformation of the South African military
Article Abstract:
The South African military has been undergoing immense transformation since the establishment of democratic government in 1994. It has involved the amalgamation of armies which were previously in opposition, the establishment of a new defence policy in which the security of the populace is the major focus, and the introduction of political control of the armed forces. The process of change has been difficult. The government has achieved much, but it has had to balance the need for change with defense needs and financial constraints, and some factors indicate diminishing commitment to restructuring.

The meaning of terrorism for the military commander
Article Abstract:
The growing problem of terrorism and the lack of its proper understanding is causing difficulties in identifying and carrying out specific counterterrorism operations. There is a need to place greater emphasis on the conceptualization of terrorism and to reject geopolitical definitions to enable the military commanders to properly allocate resources for better success on the field. Giving more attention to the meaning of terrorism will accrue operational benefits and increase the respect for justice and law.

Terrorism, technology, and the socioeconomics of death
Article Abstract:
The US should endeavour to repel any threat of terrorist attacks which use biological weapons. Biological weapons are readily available to extremist groups all over the world and are increasingly dangerous to large groups in society. Numerous safeguards must be made to minimize the risk of terrorist attack. National and international cooperation between police authorities and security agencies is of paramount importance in the war against terrorism.
