El Nino, El Viejo and the global reshaping of Latin America: surviving the UNCED coups
Article Abstract:
The relationship is examined between the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) and subsequent military-assisted impeachments of two key Latin American presidents, Carlos Andres Perez of Venezuela and Fernando Collor de Mello of Brazil. Topics include globalization, local UNCED alliances in Latin America, UNCED as an alternative paradigm for globalization, the role of Venezuela, and reactions to UNCED.
