Engaging China: Seoul-Beijing detente and Korean security
Article Abstract:
The detente between South Korea and China is a successful example of a policy of 'engaging China', and has implications for the ability of South Korea and the US to engage North Korea. This detente has tended to be neglected in debates on security issues in east Asia. There are lessons to be learnt such as the need for consistency and a political will to pursue detente. South Korea has been hit by the Asian financial crisis, and this hampers the development of an improved relationship with North Korea. The detente between China and South Korea has increased significance in this context.
