Iraq, liberal wars and illiberal containment
Article Abstract:
The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are in one respect self-evidently liberal wars, though more in a defensive sense, in that they were justified initially as part of a campaign to prevent existential attacks on the Western way of life. US president George W. Bush has justified it military operations in terms of the two linked campaigns, negatively against terror and positively for freedom and democracy, but critics find that both the campaigns as misconceived in terms of quality of the supporting analysis, the simplistic presentation and the exaggerated role claimed for armed force in their prosecution.
