Openness and security policy in South-east Asia
Article Abstract:
Open informal agreements are significant confidence-building measures and have played an important part in regional security in South-east Asia. The potential of military tension has increased in the region due to the growth in military spending. The confidence-building program of the Association of South-east Asian Nations has induced high level support for the UN Register of Conventional Arms and transparency of defense policy. The openness has created opportunities for dialogues on security and mutual restraint.

After the tests: India's options
Article Abstract:
The nuclear tests conducted by India in May 1998 is but the first step in protecting its national security. It is argued that the country must focus on developing a small but survivable nuclear force based on principles that reject both a war-fighting approach and non-weaponized deterrence favored by the US. The country must also address issues such as the vulnerability of its small nuclear force and the threats posed by Pakistan and China.
