The muzzling of the liberal press in Iran
Article Abstract:
This article examines Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's crackdown on the Iranian press after the reform candidates defeated the conservatives in the 2000 parliamentary elections. The author, maintaining President Khatami has given the press more freedom it has ever had since the 1940s, argues Khamenei blamed the activities of the press for the loss of the conservative party and allowed the conservative based judiciary to ban pro-reform newspapers and jail journalists and editors.
