This article discusses United States foreign policy regarding China during the 1950s. The author focuses on Texan millionaire William L. Clayton's suggestion that the United States should focus on improving its relations with the People's Republic of China and minimize ties with the Republic of China on Taiwan, arguing that if the United States followed that course relations between the two would not have been so painful throughout the 60s.
