A short history of labor law, 1349-1967
Article Abstract:
Economic theory has in the past six centuries embraced mercantilism, laissez-faire, Keynesian economics and again laissez-faire. The World has progressed from agricultural societies through the Industrial Revolution to high technology. The departure from laissez-faire ensued after the economic chaos of the 1929 stock market crash and the great depression which followed. Government measures such as unemployment insurance and social security came into being to lessen the economic burdens of the times. The election of a Republican Congress in 1946 started a return to laissez-faire.

Clio calls out to managers, but often they don't heed lessons of labor history
Article Abstract:
Managers who believe that they should act to destroy labor unions because of the present state of decline that unions are in should consider the history of labor in the US. While the labor movement eventually opted for collective bargaining instead of political activity, the early days of labor activity involved fighting societal prejudices through political action and violent strikes. Management efforts to eliminate unions may actually result in the strengthening of unions.

Early labor studies and the dual search for legitimacy
Article Abstract:
The pioneering labor intellectuals' personal experience had a key impact on the definition of worker and labor union interests with long-term influence on public policy and scholarship. More specifically, the search for academic recognition by these early labor scholars both coincided with and colored their analysis of the organized labor movement's search for political legitimacy. Early pioneers included Richard T Ely, Henry Carter Adams, and John R Commons.
