Fast-Food Invades the Schools
Article Abstract:
Fast-food restaurants are interested in providing school food services as a way to expand their markets. US public schools offer a potential of 26 mil customers, many of whom are already familiar with and enjoy these products. Schools have contracted with fast-food establishments to supply lunches, but a school in Virginia is becoming a franchisee for Subway, Taco Bell and Domino's products. Critics note this may contribute to rising numbers of overweight children and emphasis on taste over nutrition.

Food Industry Shakes Off Sodium Labeling
Article Abstract:
Sodium is a mineral necessary for proper body function, but many Americans consume too much sodium, which leads to problems such as hypertension. Currently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate the listing of food ingredients. However, sodium labeling could benefit individuals on low sodium diets. States are working on legislation but are meeting opposition from the food industry. Arguments for both sides are presented.

Food Safety Enforcement Enhancement Act of 1997: putting public health before the meat industry's bottom line
Article Abstract:
The Food Safety Enforcement Enhancement Act of 1997 (FSEEA) would require the meat industry to take safety measures it has traditionally refused to take. The FSEEA would increase government's meat recall powers and allow fines of up to $100,000 per day for regulation violations. Current inspection processes are inadequate. Food-related illnesses affect millions of people annually. Food should be microscopically inspected.
