Lawyer Jan Schlichtmann, the hero of Jonathan Harr's best seller 'A Civil Action,' based on the environmental case Anderson v. W.R. Grace & Co. & Beatrice Foods and now popularly known as Woburn, after the Boston suburb allegedly plagued with tainted water, has rebuilt his life after his flight to Hawaii following a loss in the case. He has gotten married and formed a new legal partnership. Since the book's publication, many environmental groups want him to champion their causes and he calls his time in Hawaii his 'wilderness years.'

A death under fire in Moscow
Article Abstract:
Branches of two American firms in Moscow had bad luck in the Oct 1993 standoff between Pres Boris Yeltsin and opponents inside the disbanded Parliament. Firestone, Duncan and Associates lost a young attorney, Terry Duncan. Duncan died near the Ostankino television center helping other people hit during the fighting. Julie Brooks, a paralegal at the Moscow branch of Baker and McKenzie, was shot while watching the fighting from the roof of her apartment building and later evacuated to a hospital in Finland.

Justices underrate role clients play
Article Abstract:
Attorneys' clients play an important role in the litigation process, a point the US Supreme Court should have addressed in ruling on Paula Jones's suit against Bill Clinton. The court described defendants as detached from the process but, in actuality, clients supply evidence, verify facts, and become involved in case strategy, discovery, and trial cross-examination.
