I am proud to work with legal services
Article Abstract:
Lawyers providing legal assistance to the poor have great influence on the lives of people accustomed to little or no access to those who make decisions in their lives. Legal aid lawyers must have obvious empathy for their clients to elicit trust and cooperation, and sometimes this sustained caring results in lawyer burnout. But meanwhile, it feeds an atmosphere of mutual support with an understanding that sharing stress is a source of strength, not of weakness. Interest in poverty law is growing among recent law school graduates, and lack of resources is the only serious obstacle between the rising need for legal services and this growing interest.

The poor of Grants Pass get access to justice
Article Abstract:
Efforts by Oregon Legal Services in Grants Pass, OR, to give the poor access to the courts are an example of efforts needed nationwide after 12 years of inadequate funding of legal services for the poor. In Grants Pass, foundation grants, charitable trusts and contributions from the private bar funded legal services for the poor, but these private sector efforts will not suffice in all cases and the federal government needs to step in again. One of Oregon Legal Services' major accomplishments was to get the court to set standards on which low-income residents were eligible to have their court filing fees in divorce cases waived.
