Reading death sentences: the narrative construction of capital punishment
Article Abstract:
Narratives about the death penalty will only erode support for capital punishment if they focus on the irrationality of applying the sentence to guilty defendants. A majority of Americans support the death penalty, but surveys also show that uncertainties underly this support. Death penalty opponents often make films that use innocent defendants to show the death penalty is unjust. A more effective approach would be to use a guilty defendant to portray the lack of humanity and the futility of the death penalty and expose the fact that it does not resolve the chaos of murder.
