Sol Wachtler tells story of drug woe
Article Abstract:
Sol Wachtler, former New York chief judge, explains his harassment of socialite Joy Silverman after she broke off their love affair as the aftereffects of drugs prescribed by his family doctor to counteract depression he suffered from in late 1991. At that time, Wachtler was involved in a lawsuit against Governor Mario Cuomo, a long-time friend, over court funding, faced laying off 500 court employees due to budget cuts, and also the effect of these cuts on his Individual Assignment System. He feared seeking psychiatric help because of the stigma if he sought political office. He accepts that his arrest cut short his career and is unsure what he will do in the future.

McDougal's lawyer tells how he will 'try' Starr; there's credible evidence of witness tampering, he says
Article Abstract:
Susan McDougal was imprisoned for 18 mos for a conviction in the Whitewater loan fraud case, plus 18 more for refusing to answer questions before a federal grand jury, and she was later accused of stealing $150,000 from orchestra conductor Zubin Mehta's wife Nancy while she was working as their bookkeeper. McDougal maintains this was a gift from Nancy Mehta and has accused Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr of using the Mehta case to force her to implicate the Clinton's in the Whitewater land deal. Mark J Geragos, McDougal's lawyer, threatens to use Starr's alleged political bias and payments to key Whitewater witness David Hale against him.

The president's spinmeister tells all - er, sort of
Article Abstract:
Lanny J. Davis, former member of the legal and media team fielding inquiries about Pres Bill Clinton's various financial scandals, adopted the strategy during Sen Fred Thompson's campaign-finance hearings of releasing to the press any harmful documents before their release by the committee, allowing the White House to explain the documents in its preferred context. Davis left his post on Jan 31, 1998, this departure being unrelated to the allegations by former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. He had promised the president a period long enough in the job to handle the campaign-finance hearings.
