The Working Time Directive
Article Abstract:
The EU's Working Time Directive, despite initial UK opposition, was required to be implemented by Nov 23, 1996, in the UK so as to provide important employee rights regarding work hours. Although there are several exemptions and derogations available, the Directive requires employers to provide workers with three weeks vacation annually, limit work to 48 hours in a 7-day period, and provide regular rest periods and breaks. Night and shift workers are covered by several other provisions. The UK's legal challenge to implementation was rejected by the European Court of Justice, which cited a misuse of powers, a defective legal theory, and a proportionality breach.

The Employment Rights (Dispute Resolution) Bill
Article Abstract:
The Employment Rights (Dispute Resolution) Bill will lead to changes in the functioning of industrial tribunals if it is passed. It is the result of the examination of the industrial tribunals and among the changes it proposes are an effort to increase dispute resolution without relying on the tribunals and a renaming of industrial tribunals as employment tribunals. It also proposes an extension of the technical category of cases which allows tribunal chairs to function alone without lay members and the use of legal offices to attend to interlocutory functions.
