Court opens report on basketball probe
Article Abstract:
The North Carolina Supreme Court has ruled in News & Observer Publishing Co v Poole that reports made by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) in regards to their investigation of the North Carolina State University's basketball program are public records and must be released. The commission appointed by the university to investigate the basketball players' drug use and academic achievements had hoped, by using SBI agents who are exempt from the state's open records law, to keep the results of the investigation secret.

Court rejects request for names
Article Abstract:
The US Supreme Court has ruled that the public is not entitled to a list of names of deported Haitians under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Attorney Michael Ray filed a FOIA request for the names, but the State Department deleted names from records they gave Ray, citing exemption 6 of FOIA regarding privacy. Several human rights groups and news media groups filed amicus curiae in support of Ray, but the court ruled that the Haitians' privacy outweighed the public's right to know.
