Fletcher's satire of Caratach in 'Bonduca'
Article Abstract:
The author discusses gender and British identity representation in Fletcher's 'Bonduca'. The character Caratach is described as hypermasculine and morally authoritative, representative of Roman values and attitudes. In contrast, the character Queen Bonduca is portrayed as irrational and childish. The author argue further, however, that Fletcher intentionally lampoons Caratach's soldierly, masculine virtues in the pro-British, rather than pro-Roman, play.
