Science fiction in academe
Article Abstract:
Science fiction's entry into the curriculum in the 1960s was accompanied by a lot of flourish, due to the surprise that colleges would teach pulp fiction and the realization that many literary works actually fit the science fiction genre. The introduction of science fiction courses in 1962 was made easier by the entry of utopian courses a few years before, both spreading gradually in the 1960s and growing quickly in the 1970s. An annotated list of courses in the 1960s in institutions such as Colgate University, Pennsylvania State University, Stanford UNiversity and Indiana State University is presented.

Teaching science fiction
Article Abstract:
The teaching of science fiction, like the genre itself, is all-encompassing and thus difficult to define. All the social and physical sciences, history, idea, futurology, religion, morality, ecology, reading skills and many others can be taught through science fiction. There are various approaches to teaching the course, three of which are 'the great books,' 'the ideas in science fiction' and the historical approaches. A comprehensive survey of high schools and colleges to determine the number of classes being taught would be helpful to the field.

On science fiction in college
Article Abstract:
The 1970s was a golden age of science fiction in the academe, with the genre enjoying wide acceptance by students. A listing of science fiction courses in the first half of the decade showed that there were about 500 college-level courses in the US and Canada. The genre's introduction to the curriculum is credited for its increased popularity, with science fiction books enjoying impressive sales. Science fiction courses began in 1962, with the first regular course offered by Colgate University under Mark Hillegas.
