Article Abstract:
The Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and other colleges are emphasizing a broad approach, putting emphasis on history, economics, law and theory in an attempt to re-evaluate the best way to teach journalism. The best way to learn journalism is by doing it and hence, students were assigned investigations of violent crime on college campuses in Texas and were expected to access public records under the Freedom of Information Act and the Texas Public Information Act.

The controversial practice of colleges in California that artificially boost the enrollment by signing up a mass number of high-school physical education students in order to gain more state funding is discussed. The colleges that were claiming state apportionment funding for these students had to pay fees to the coaches for signing them up
