'Woman Speaks': representations of working women in postwar America
Article Abstract:
The 1945-49 newsreel/television show 'Woman Speaks,' targetted at white middle-class women, attempted to portray the role of women in post-World War II America. Although the show avoided the debate on the proper workplace of women, it tended to feminize women's intrusion into the male world by deliberately relating them to domestic activities. The show contributed to the creation of an ideal feminine model of the period, but it failed to represent a true picture of women in post-World War II America.
