1,500 hospital nurses strike in Minneapolis
Article Abstract:
Nurses at Fairview Health Services' hospitals in Minneapolis and Edina, MN, went on strike after rejecting a labor contract offer that they claimed did not provide for adequate patient care. Mark Enger, administrator of Fairview, said both hospitals would continue to operate during the strike by hiring 400 replacement nurses and nursing managers. The nurses contended that that they are stretched too thin to take care of patients safely and need a higher first-year salary to recruit more people to the profession.

Businessman Bob Naegele Jr. is marketing a National Hockey League expansion team called the Minnesota Wild. The team, which was launched in June 1997, still does not have players, coaches, an arena or uniforms. To market the expansion team, Naegel has launched a grass-roots strategy that promoted amateur hockey in Minnesota rather than the Minnesota Wild. As a result, Naegele was able to secure almost 12,000 season-ticket reservations for the team, which will play its first game in Oct 2000.
