Aluminum industry likely to face regulatory scrutiny
Article Abstract:
Alcan Aluminum Ltd's plan to create a new global powerhouse with European partners Pechiney SA of France and Alusuisse Lonza Group AG of Switzerland would likely prompt a new round of regulatory scrutiny in the aluminum industry. If the merger succeeds, the new entity would gain almost 14% share of the global primary aluminum capacity, or 2.76 million metric tonnes, just slightly ahead of Alcoa, the largest aluminum company in the world. However, analysts expressed doubt that Canadian, US or European regulatory bodies would outrightly object to the merger.

Alcoa tight-lipped as rivals in talks
Article Abstract:
Alcoa Inc, the largest aluminum producer in the world, remains mum as its major competitors, Alcan Aluminum Ltd, France's Pechiney SA and Switzerland's Alusuisse Lonza Group AG, are working on a three-way merger. A merger among its main rivals would pose a threat to Alcoa's dominance in the aluminum industry, but analysts said that the US-based powerhouse would just shrug off any deal threatening its status. In terms of revenue, the merged company would have C$24.8 billion in annual revenues, surpassing Alcoa's yearly revenues of C$15.5 billion.
