Qwest makes offer to US west
Article Abstract:
Qwest Communications, a long-distance telephone company, is considering a higher bid for local carrier US West than the proposed $37 billion merger deal between US West and Bermuda-based Global Crossing. The informal offer was made because the global telecommunications market is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2005 as compared to about $700 billion in 1999. The consolidation is also fueled by the need for carriers that can manage traffic over high-speed fiber-optic lines and that can go directly into the homes and businesses of customers.

MCI, Sprint close in on deal
Article Abstract:
MCI WorldCom is close to reaching a deal that will allow it to acquire Sprint Corp. The two parties are ironing important issues such as price and the so-called cultural aspects. The agreement include the sale of Sprint's core phone operations and keeping of Sprint's wireless unit as a tracking stock. If a deal is finalized, MCI WorldCom CEO Bernie Ebbers will retain control of the combined business, while Sprint CEO William Esrey will probably leave the company.
