Political violence resulted in 42 deaths in Mombasa, Kenya, and surrounding areas. Although no tourists were targeted, many travelers canceled bookings. Much of the violence was related to the upcoming presidential election, but some of it also resulted from resentment of outsiders settling in Mombasa.

The Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd finally got Cernavoda Unit 1 up and running after 18 years and $300 million in Canadian loans, which have yet to be paid. Romanian officials are likely to ask Canada to complete a second CANDU reactor, but the cost to Canada may be too great.
