Coal producers face 30% cut in demand from Japan
Article Abstract:
Canadian coal producers are expected a huge cut in their exports following a request from the Japanese steel industry for reductions of up to 30% in volumes delivery in 1999. Japan has sought the cut because of an oversupply in steel due to weak demand as a result of the Asian economic recession. Coal producers, who were already forced to take price cuts of 18% from Japanese importers in Apr 1998, ship more than half of their exports to Japan.
