Canadian joins global airline alliance

Canadian Airlines International Ltd., based in Calgary, Alberta, has joined OneWorld, a global airline alliance that counts Qantas Airways Ltd., Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., British Airways PLC and American Airlines Inc. as members. OneWorld, a rival of StarAlliance to which Air Canada belongs, will service 632 airports in 138 countries. With a staff of 220,000 people, OneWorld will maintain 1,524 airplanes that will fly approximately 174 million passengers annually by mid-1999. The alliance will help Canadian Airlines extend its services and reduce its overhead costs and its network of routes.

WestJet to nearly double fleet, buying up to seven more jets

WestJet Airlines Ltd., a Calgary, Alberta-based airline, has announced the acquisition of maximum of seven more jetliners, a move that is expected to almost double the size of the carrier in Western Canada. The acquisition is expected to boost the number of discount flights that WestJet Airlines operates in Western Canada, adding frequency of its service and another city where it will introduce flights. WestJet Airlines Clive Beddoe strongly denied rumors that his company will expand to Central Canada and US, saying its not advisable to go south because of the weak value of dollar.

Canadian Airlines to buy five badly needed aircraft

Canadian Airlines International Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta, is purchasing an Airbus A320 aircraft and four Boeing 767ER transpacific jetliners for an undisclosed amount. The move is part of Canadian Airlines' efforts to update its aging fleet. The carrier stated that it intends to utilize the Airbus A320 aircraft for its Asian flights, while the Boeing 767 jetliners are to be used for domestic flights. Airline spokesperson Renee Smith-Valade stated that the 767s are anticipated to bring in personnel savings as they require two pilots in lieu of the usual three pilots.
