Onex tornado tears through airlines
Article Abstract:
Onex Corp has launched an unsolicited bid to acquire and merge Air Canada and Canadian Airlines International Ltd in a C$1.8 billion deal. The merger proposal called "Project Tornado" would enable Onex Corp to generate huge profits by leading the restructuring of the Canadian airline industry, ensure the continued operation of financially troubled Canadian Airlines and give AMR Corp subsidiary American Airlines a stake in the new airline. However, the hostile bid also elicited negative responses including allegations of insider trading and Onex Corp's use of Liberal Party contacts to win government support.
