Chateau, Suzy Shier expect good year

Chateau Stores of Canada and Suzy Shier Ltd., both are fashion retailers based in Montreal, Quebec, are optimistic they will be able to raise sales and profits in 1998 despite modest growth in fashion and increased competition from department stores. Chateau Stores, which reported that its earnings doubled to C$5.4 million on sales of C$150 million for fiscal year that ended Jan. 31, 1998, hopes to further boost its sales by adapting quickly to fashion trends. Suzy Shier CEO Irving Teitlebaum said shareholders of the company is expecting strong profits in 1999 given strong earnings for first quarter of 1998.

Jobless rate climbs to 8.3%

Semopac Canada of Boucherville, Quebec, began its blow molding operation in Mar 1998 to manufacture 18 L polycarbonate water bottles. Keeping a huge inventory of bottles is a means to attain a fast turnaround. The Boucherville facility, which is operating 24 hours daily, is capable of embossing the bottler's logo or name onto the bottles. With its new Johnson Controls' Liberty extrusion blow molding machinery, Semopac Canada can make more than 750,000 bottles annually.

Stitches owner to buy 51 women's wear stores

Article Abstract:

YM Inc of Toronto, Ontario, has announced that it will acquire 51 Weekend Edition women's clothing outlets from retailer Venator Group Inc of New York, for an undisclosed amount. YM, which owns the Stitches retail stores, said that it will operate the 51 Weekend stores separately from its Stitches outlets. Venator, the former Woolworth discount chain, said that it will sell or close the remaining 16 stores in Canada that are not part of the proposed sale.
