At issue: can the northern spotted owl's ancient forest habitat be saved without causing widespread unemployment in the Pacific Northwest?
Article Abstract:
Opinions vary as to whether protecting the northern spotted owl and the timber industry in the Pacific Northwest can find a middle ground. The timber industry is, in reality, just a small percentage of the economic forces in the Pacific Northwest. The survival of a community relies on effective conversion plans not on overemphasis of the environmental law's effect on the economy. Yetothers strongly feel that laws on environment continue to displace workers who are not likely to find jobs elsewhere.

Should the Endangered Species Act be re-enacted without major changes?
Article Abstract:
Debate over the future of the Endangered Species Act have intensified as conservatives claim the law costs America jobs and money and does not meet its goal. These people want amendments made to the act before its reenactment. Proponents of the Act's current form claim that business has not suffered greatly, and that the act is the only thing that offers endangered animals any real protection.
