A study by Prof Michael Brauer found that 40% of Canadian ice-hockey rinks have elevated levels of nitrogen dioxide, which can be poisonous in high levels. Some provinces have laws requiring air monitoring, but parents and players should inquire about the status of ventilations systems.

Research has found that babies that are born with low-birth weights are more likely to have health problems later in life. Pre-natal care increases the odds that women will deliver healthy babies. It is important to foster self-esteem in older children.
