Do American workers lack the necessary skills to qualify for better-paying jobs?
Article Abstract:
American workers may lack the necessary skills to qualify for better-paying jobs. Shrinking occupations overwhelmingly demand modest skill levels while high skills are needed for many of the expanding occupations. Math, language and reasoning capabilities are needed in the areas where jobs are growing most. From an alternative perspective, there is less a skill deficit in the present economy and that of the future than a wage deficit brought on by market forces unrestrained and worker protections eroded, and vital labor market institutions should be strengthened.

At issue: is affirmative action still necessary?
Article Abstract:
Proponents of affirmative action believe such programs provide fairness in employment. Merit was not an argument when members of the good old boy network were given jobs prior to affirmative action. Opponents believe since racial discrimination is no long insurmountable. They argue that growth of the black middle class occurred prior to the implementation of affirmative action programs.
