Article Abstract:
Pro-integrationist militia groups killed 62 East Timoreans in attacks on groups supporting independence from Indonesia. Australia's shadow foreign minister Laurie Brereton accused the Indonesian military of supporting the attacks. Prime Minister John Howard opposes Australian military involvement in the civil war in East Timor. The CIA is rumored to be involved in separating the island politically from Indonesia.

Article Abstract:
Indonesian president B.J. Habibie has decided to allow East Timor to leave Indonesia, earning him acclaim from the international world and silencing his critics at home. Radical groups in East Timor want complete independence, but moderates, who have worked with Indonesian politicians to come to a compromise, prefer the alternative of political autonomy.
