Eaton talks advance with possible buyer

Insolvent department store chain T Eaton Co Ltd has announced that it is negotiating with a potential buyer of the company. Eaton has launched also a strategy to sell the assets of the company by piecemeal as another option. The retailer will tap investment banking firm ScotiaMcLeod Inc to sell off some of its real estate and find new tennats to assume its store leases. It will also hire realtor J.J. Barnicke Ltd to sell its other real estate assets worth C$50 million.

Life insurers should offer policies in plain language, watchdogs say

Canadian industry watchdog the Canadian Council of Insurance Regulators said that life insurance firms should use simple language so that consumers can have a better understanding of life insurance contracts. Council chmn Bennett Campbell said that insurance contracts are often complicated and hard to understand. Regulators are suggesting that consumers be given plain-language documents which explain the important provisions of contracts.
