European unity
Article Abstract:
Political developments in Europe have stalled the move for unity in the region. Problems such as the localized Balkan wars and the rejection of the Maastricht Treaty by Denmark and possibly France, have been an enormous setback for proponents of a new United States of Europe. However, British support for the new alliance and the move by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to allow participation in conflicts outside its area of responsibility have brought promise to the movement.

End of the Cold War
Article Abstract:
The political situation in Europe has changed rapidly since the collapse of communism in the former USSR. Nuclear and conventional weapons reductions introduced by such reformists as former Soviet Pres Mikhail Gorbachev and Russian Pres Boris Yeltsin have put an end to the Cold War. Nations of the Eastern bloc once alligned with the Warsaw Pact have rid themselves of their communist past and are no longer considered a threat to regional security and peace.

European Community
Article Abstract:
The move to create a purely European organization started with the formation of the European Community (EC) in 1957. One of the first roles of the EC was to regulate trade among member countries by forming the Common Market. The EC was organized for two main reasons. One was to promote peace in a world wracked by conflict, and second, to counter the continued US dominance in the region.
