She was credited for implementing measures that allowed the company to keep track of costs and reduce them. As a result, the airliner manufacturer is now making money after missing a chance during the biggest boom ever in commercial-jet orders. Only 44 years old, she is Boeing's youngest senior executive.

Ford Motor finance chief to stepdown

Ford Motor Co CFO John Devine announced his retirement effective Sep 1999. Devine's sudden resignation comes as no surprise as Ford CEO Jacques Nasser has been reorganizing the automaker's top management since he assumed the top post five months ago. Devine, who was CFO since late 1996, will be replaced by 64-year-old Wayne Booker, who observers expect to be a temporary replacement.

Bloodied but unbowed, Ciena adapts to survive
