Five million in the same boat as Heather Hill

Article Abstract:

The Australian parliamentary committee reports that about 5 million Australians are ineligible to hold office because they hold dual citizenship. One Nation Party senator-elect Heather Hill with her xenophobic and chauvinistic ideologies just found out she owes allegiance to the British government. Although lawmakers are not ready to hod the referendum necessary to change the constitution, they do favor replacing the existing section with a simple equipment that elected officials must be citizens of Australia.

The low turnout in the British election in 2001 is a worrying trend, but positive for Australia where compulsory voting is shown to have merit. Electoral reform either compulsory voting or a preferential system may solve voting problems.
