Housing discrimination
Article Abstract:
There is concern about growing discrimination in the housing industry. Studies have revealed lenders' bias against minority borrowers. The Clinton administration is combatting the problem through new compliance examiners and HUD is working on an interagency task force. The Fair Housing Act was meant to ensure that there is not discrimination by owners and rental agents in real estate deals. While the initiatives have drawn attention to the problem, many Americans still believe that discrimination is not an active problem. There is also the feeling that present day segregation is by mutual consent.

Political consultants: are advisers and handlers harming democracy?
Article Abstract:
Political consultants have taken a prominent place in campaigns in the 1990s, leading to concerns that they have too great an influence on American democracy. Presidential candidates Bob Dole and Bill Clinton make great use of consultants, with results such as Clinton's centrist move. In the age of television, consultants have become essential, especially since party loyalty is in decline among the public. Consultants are experts at direct mailing and media manipulation, but these strong tactics can alienate voters.
