How Beijing became our China
Article Abstract:
This article describes the history of Sino-Australian relations since the founding of the People's Republic in October 1949. Relevant points include Australia's initial backing of Chiang Kai-shek's regime, Australia's reluctance to recognize the new Communist regime in Beijing, and Labor Prime Minister Gough Whitlam's extension of diplomatic recognition to Beijing and withdrawal of support for Taiwan in December 1971.

Prizes for the arts and literature are increasing and have become spectacles where money can be handed out to struggling artists. Writers should receive due recognition by being paid properly and then these prizes would become worthless.
