In multimedia storm, text thrives
Article Abstract:
The written word seems certain to survive and even thrive in the coming multimedia word. David Bunnell, the publisher of NewMedia magazine, says that the multimedia industry still publishes much more on paper than on CD-ROM or other new media. Wired, another San Francisco Bay Area-based magazine on digital technologies, extolled the value of print in its second issue. Both NewMedia and Wired are seen as bellwether magazines; both use advanced technologies to communicate with readers. Wired gets 20 electronic-mail messages for every paper letter. This leads contributor Paul Saffo to opine that we are in the midst of a great epistle-writing age. Roger Fidler, director of the Knight-Ridder Information Design Laboratory, predicts electronic publishing will eventually overtake paper publishing.
