Article Abstract:

This article examines the fact that most consumers of computer technology are either unaware of the manufacturer of the microprocessor used in their particular personal computer, or else assume that it must be Intel, the best known maker of microprocessor chips. Relevant points include the importance of brand names among microprocessors, the use of outsourcing by manufacturers, and the names of Intel's principal rivals such as AMD and Rise Technology.
