Kidnapped in Burma

Nicholas Cheesman was captured by Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) rebels when he was photographing the scene of an attack by the rival Karen National Union as an aid worker for the human rights group Burma Issues. He and a Burmese colleague were transported to DKBA headquarters. They were released unharmed following intervention by the Australian government.

Forest fires caused by subsistence farmers clearing plots are threatening the already-endangered orangutan population of Indonesian Borneo as well as causing other environmental problems. Dry conditions and lack of funds are hampering firefighting efforts. Competition for food has caused clashes between farmers and orangutans raiding garden plots.
