Preventing teen drug use
Article Abstract:
With nearly 50% of American 12th graders admitting to having used drugs in a 1994 survey, some people fear a new drug epidemic is on the horizon. While this number represents an increase in teen drug use in recent years, it is far below the peak drug-use years of the mid-1970s. Drug prevention programs are being characterized by many as ineffective and in need of reform. Some see drug experimentation as a normal part of adolescence, however, and point out that most occasional users grow up to be respected members of society.

Police corruption
Article Abstract:
Police corruption is getting more attention than is has in decades, with the Rodney King beating, arrest of corrupt cops in New Orleans and the Mark Furhman debacle among the acts that have led to citizen outrage. Various steps are being taken to reduce corruption, including community policing and more stringent training and selection of officers. Some claim, however, that the police mentality is too ingrained to be trained away, and point to the loyalty amongst officers as the biggest impediment to progress.
