AltaVista offering free Internet access
Article Abstract:
AltaVista has become the first major Internet site to offer free access when it dropped its $19.95-$21.95 monthly charge Aug 12, 1999. The move is an attempt to expand its customer base and aims to recover lost subscription revenue from increased advertising. Although earlier free access ventures have failed, AltaVista expects its 38 million monthly users to buffer subscription losses.
