On-line lies cast doubt on e-biz databases
Article Abstract:
E-business marketing efforts are threatened as a consumer fudges personal details to protect their privacy on the Web. In a study of 10,000 North American households by Forrester Research Inc., two-third of Web surfers had serious concerns about their on-line privacy. Those concerns pose a challenge to e-businesses, which are counting on getting accurate information to properly market products, and to infomediaries, which assemble and then sell databases to third parties. Companies, expert say, need to provide up-front privacy policy agreements and compensation programs in order to motivate on-line consumers to voluntarily give accurate information. In Canada, the federal government has passed a law that among other things would make it illegal for a company not to uphold its privacy agreement.
