Radiation phobia arouses fears
Article Abstract:
Those who support irradiation as a means of preserving food products realize that the negative public perception of radiation is the main cause of opposition to the new technology. Radiation phobia even extends far beyond the scope of food irradiation to include patients who are anxious over the effects of radiation treatment. Discussion of food irradiation should not be confined to professional journals if people are to be educated about this preservation technique. Nutrition expert Edward S. Josephson believes it is confusion with nuclear fallout which creates a negative image for the process.

Is the nation on the verge of a new period of inflation?
Article Abstract:
The nation may be on the verge of a new period of inflation. According to one perspective, claims that outright deflation is around the corner are not well founded, and inflation will pick up by the end of 1998. Temporary events have brought on the cutback in inflation. From another point of view, forces of disinflation are permanent. Intense global competition started at the end of the Cold War. In Europe and Japan market structures are too rigid and government intervention too great. Thus the dollar is strong, a major source of disinflation.
