Deregulation and the internet are creating a more complex and competitive market for Australian banks and consumer finance companies. For finance companies, direct and inexpensive technology is replacing negotiations through third-party brokers. GE Capital's recent acquisition of Avco Financial Services is expected to show how effectively the company can distribute its banking and financing options to its online market.

People will no longer have to travel long distances to attend funerals, because video-conferencing technology is being used to enable mourners to view funerals anywhere in the world. John Allison/Monkhouse is an Australian-based chain of funeral parlors with access to 2,000 video-conference rooms in 30 countries. The first video-linked funeral was broadcast from Melbourne to mourners in London and Toronto.
