Red River rising: Manitobans brace for severe spring flooding

The Red River has already caused extensive damage to Fargo and Grank Forks, North Dakota, and most experts predict the river will flood parts of southern Manitoba. Winnipeg is frequently hit by floods in the spring, but the Red River Floodway helps to divert some of the water.

A unique school gives native kids a second chance
Article Abstract:
Former nun Geraldine MacNamara founded a center for native youth called Rossbrook House in 1976. The Winnipeg community center also houses an innovative junior high school called Eagles Circle School that helps troubled native youth excel in their studies and at life.

A state of emergency was declared for Manitoba's Red River valley region on Apr 23, 1997, as floodwaters approached from the south. Officials hope the $63-million Floodway built in 1968 will save Winnipeg from an estimated $1 billion in damages.
