Residential real estate broker first to go public

Real estate broker Homeservices.com has launched its initial public offering worth $69 million. The firm's shares are expected to be sold at $16 per share. Homeservices.com is the second largest firm in the industry and the first to offer its shares to the public. It presently earns only a small portion of its revenue from online sales, but will soon offer mortgages, title insurance and home security systems through the Internet.

VA Linux offering provides spectacle

The share price of VA Linux rose by 698% from its $30 IPO price to $239 1/4 on Dec 9, 1999. Analysts were surprised by the performance of the stock, considering the company's products are based on software it does not own and can be downloaded for free from the Internet. It sells software 'drivers' that make the Linux operating system run faster. VA Linux, which employs 80 people, already has a market value of $9.5 billion.
