Rising use of guns
Article Abstract:
Gun homicides committed by teenagers in both rural and urban high schools have been noted. A 1986 survey showed that gun homicide was the second leading cause of death among youth belonging to the 15 to 19 age bracket. Among the causes of rise in gun violence among students are quarrels and the unchecked weapons-carrying practice of students. The violent atmosphere in today's schools can be attested by the results of surveys on teachers conducted in 1940 and 1980. The 1940 survey listed littering, chewing gum and disobeying rules on dressing as the main problems of teachers. In the 1980 survey, the the listing included assault, robbery and rape.

These children were periodically visited by teachers in their homes as part of the preschool program. The study entailed following the lives of 123 children from 1962 to 1982. It revealed that the subjects, compared to a control group, were more emotionally and psychologically healthy. They were also shown to be more likely to be employed.

Preventing teen pregnancy: is better sex education the answer?
Article Abstract:
Teenage pregnancy is a continuing problem in the US where many students fail to complete school because they become pregnant. However, sex education or even providing contraception at school clinics may not be the solution because the problem is more extensive. Even teenagers who have contraception do not use it consistently and some are trying to get pregnant because it gives them a sense of connection with the future and makes them feel adult. A statistical increase in teenage pregnancy but must be related to an increase in sexual activity.
