Russia and the former Soviet Republics: The Russian bear
Article Abstract:
The Russian Empire was autocratic and repressive and reigned over the non-Russian people who had no tradition of Western-style democratic institutions. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Russia continued to expand by becoming the main participant in European diplomatic and military struggles whereas in the east, it gained control in the mid and late 19th century over Central Asian known as northern China.

Human Rights Watch indicated in a report that eyewitness accounts indicate a death toll possibly as high as 500, citing the indiscriminate killings as a massacre. The report calls on the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, Russia and China to ensure that an independent investigation is conducted.
